Zz plant cats safe? (The zamioculcas zamiifolia)
You may not be able to differentiate between the Zz plant and a Cycad, especially if you’ve seen the two for the first time. However, there is something unique about the Zz plant that I would like to share with you.
First of all, the ZZ plant is common in Eastern Africa and belongs to the Atracae family. It is a plant that has been existing for centuries. The name “Zz” came from its botanical name—Zamioculcas zamiifolia; it is a thick-leafy plant that looks like palms.
One of the unique traits of the Zz plant is that it can tolerate different light intensities—be it bright light or low light. However, it grows best in regions with low sunlight intensity.
Besides, it is a flowering plant that produces tiny flowers at its base when grown in its niche.
ZZ plant easy to grow?
ZZ plant is often referred to as a “slow grower” since it may take up to three years to grow a 2ft stem.
However, it is not that slow,
Scientifically, the rate at which a plant elongates its stem significantly depends on the sunlight amount it gets. And now, for the ZZ plant, it needs low light to bright light plus different watering intensities, which must be regularly.
Of course, the ZZ plant is an easy-to-grow plant that not often produces flowers.
As mentioned, the Zz needs low to bright sunlight. These sunlight intensities can be available at the corner of your house, provided it is opposite the window. Moreover, Zz is a pest-resistant plant, so you don’t have to spend on insecticides or pesticides.
So as you can see, it’s not a challenging task to grow the ZZ plant. Like any other plant, the ZZ plant needs well-drained fertile soil, and you’ll only need a liquid fertilizer.
ZZ plant toxic for a cat?
In the fact that it looks gorgeous, the ZZ plant is poisonous to both pets and humans. However, it is not that dangerous, but you still need to be careful. It has a toxic sap that can irritate and cause skin rashes.
If your cat takes even a tiny bite of a ZZ plant, it will experience a severe digestive problem. But it doesn’t mean that we should stay away from the entire plant. It is an excellent plant that can beautify your home.
What happens when my cat eats the Zz plant?
ZZ plant has calcium oxalate. Calcium oxalates are what cause kidney stones in humans. And so, your cat may experience the same reaction. Other severe reactions include excess diarrhea and vomiting.
